Illegal Drugs and Firearms Seized in Baguio City; Suspect Arrested

May 01, 2024 - In a significant operation, the National Bureau of Investigation-Cordillera Autonomous Region (NBI-CAR) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Cordillera Autonomous Region (PDEA-CAR) seized almost half a million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride, popularly known as “shabu”, and two firearms with live ammunition. The joint operation took place on April 25, 2024, at a hotel located along Legarda Road, Baguio City.

The illegal drugs and firearms were recovered from Anthony Lacbungan Rapanut. Rapanut had managed to evade the NBI-CAR for several months but was inevitably arrested due to the persistent monitoring of the NBI-CAR operatives. It was also discovered that Rapanut has no license to own and possess any firearms.

Representatives from the Department of Justice (DOJ), the media, and the Barangay were present during the buy-bust operation to ensure compliance with section 21 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Rapanut was presented for inquest proceedings for violation of Republic Act No. 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002) for the sale, use, and possession of illegal drugs, and violation of Republic Act No. 10591 for possessing firearms with live ammunition without a license. This operation marks a significant step in the ongoing fight against illegal drugs and unlicensed firearms in the region.
